The European wild cat or forest cat (Felis silvestris silvestris) is widespread in Europe, some Mediterranean islands and parts of southwest Asia and is characterized mainly by the bushy tail, which ends in a broad, blunt curve. At the tail end there are often three black "squiggles". The coat is dense, the stripe pattern quite noticeable, but often washed out. The biggest problem for the wildcat today is the ever more intensive use of the landscape through traffic, settlements and agriculture. As a result, the animals were pushed back to a few remaining habitats. These last retreats are isolated from each other. The few wild cat populations living there are very small..
