The chamois inhabits the entire Alpine region and parts of the Balkans and the Carpathians. Chamois are also found in the Caucasus and Anatolia. In Spain, southwestern France and central Italy live the other species of Pyrenees chamois. The largest area of Europe is located in Austria. The habitat Hochgebirge is a retreat area, the earlier spreading of the chamois in low mountain ranges could be occupied by archaeological finds.
The animal prefers to stay in the upper forest belt, but often rises in the summer up into the mountains. If the chamois are disturbed further down, she will go to the most inaccessible areas, from where she will visit the grassy fields between the rocks at dawn. Towards winter, she moves further into the woods.
